In the age of traditional kick-ass ensemble teams, filmmaker Teresa Dowell-Vest has decided to break all the rules. Interweaving Black history with a fabled story, the Virginia native has woven together a story that is as much practical  as it is mythological,   giving her characters more depth than your average superhero. Soon superheroes of color like Storm, Catwoman, and Hancock, will be in better company with the first family of Black superheroes. Ms. Dowell-Vest sat down with us to discuss superheroes, pitching her story, & selling her vision to Hollywood.

Tell us about Genesis. Genesis is the story of the world’s first team of Black superheroes. It’s my attempt at creating superheroes that look like me. I think the unique thing about Genesis is that its methodology is rooted in real American history. The film is a trilogy, so there’s three parts to the series.  Genesis: The Beginning, the introduction to the superheroes and villains, sets the story…and the franchise…in motion. Genesis: The Resurrection, the second installment, is part prequel and part sequel.  As a prequel, I tell the story of how the experiments began…in the same wards of the Tuskegee experiments and how the parents of the heroes arrive at giving their children super human powers.  As a sequel, I continue to present challenges for the heroes in present day, including blurring the lines of good and evil. And Part 3, Genesis: Revelations, is the final installment in the first trilogy set, in that it’s the final battle between the villains and the superheroes…but it’s not to be assumed that the villains remain villains…or that the heroes remain heroes.
